SPINAL Decompression

Here at Health Mantra Physiotherapy Clinic, we provide one the best spinal decompression treatment. We thrive to provide you needed excellent care for your pain and discomfort. We understand that getting pain from the spine could be excruciating and life-changing. We use spinal decompression treatment to help to minimize or alleviate the pain. It is very important to use this treatment method in a timely manner to get expected results.

What is Spinal Injury?

The human spine consist of 33 vertebrae which are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 4 coccyx.
All are connected to each other and from each joint the nerves comes out. Those nerves control the different parts of our body. Any movement and sensations are depends on those nerves. Between each vertebrae there is a disc which consist of fluid and other tissues. With age or due to injuries to our back and neck the disc might bulge out and compresses the adjacent nerve. When nerve is compressed the pain like tingling, numbness, shooting and burning goes to arms or legs.

What is Spinal Decompression?

It is one of the method to treat spinal disc disease. The name itself suggest that it is the treatment to decompress the spinal nerves. The spinal decompression therapy will help to pull those vertebrae and puts the disc back to its place and in turns it decreases the compression on nerve and relieves the tingling, numbness, shooting or burning sensation.
There are two ways to achieve the decompression at spinal level. First method is manual traction of the spine. In this method, therapist puts patient in specific position and the therapist uses the body force to pull patient’s spine. This method requires lot of effort from therapist to achieve minimal traction. This method is used when the patient cannot tolerate the force from actual decompression machine. Second method is to use the spinal decompression machine. The specific amount of traction in spine is applied through this machine. The patient will be fitted with straps and traction is applied to patient’s spine through these. The amount of traction is set in to machine and machine will pull through harness accordingly.

How Spinal Decompression works?

The spinal decompression helps to relieve pressure from nerve which causes a pain. Once the pressure is reduced on the nerve it helps to decrease or alleviate tingling, numbness, burning, shooting pain like symptoms.
Patient Preparation:
At our facility, we thrive to give maximum comfort to our patients. The patient should arrive and regular comfort fitting cloths. We provide gowns and shorts but it is recommended that you bring your own cloths.

Patient’s expectation:
Patient should expect that the harness will be tied through the waist and chest area. There might be some discomfort with it but it can be adjusted according to patient’s comfort. Patient will feel some pulling at lower back which can also be adjusted according to patient’s comfort.

Treatment Procedure:

Patient has to be supine on treatment table. The harness will be attached to lower back and chest area. The traction weight is adjusted by therapist in to the machine. The machine will pull the patient’s spine through the harness which will help to reduce the symptoms. The treatment takes approximately 10-15 mins. The treatment should be carried for 2-3 times per week

Indications:

Spinal decompression should help to treat:
1. Sciatica
2. Disc bulging
3. Herniated Disc
4. Degenerated Disc
5. Radiculopathy
6. Muscle sprain and strain

Contra-Indications:
There are some conditions where we cannot use spinal decompression. We should not use spinal decompression if there is any:
1. Pregnancy
2. Vertebrae Fracture
3. Spinal surgery like spinal fusion, spinal implants
4. Increases symptoms in prior treatments
5. Spinal stenosis
6. Spinal infection or cancer or tumor
7. Inflammatory Disease of Spine like Ankylosing Spondylitis
8. Spondylolisthesis

Expectations:
As condition improves patient should have decrease in symptoms. Tingling and numbness reduces as the compression on the nerve decreases. Pain at lower back reduces and there will be increase in lumbar ROMs if there is any restriction.

As like other treatment, there is a slight chance of increase in symptoms. If pain increases patient should let the therapist know at next visit and so the therapist can make changes to the treatment if needed.

If you have neck or back pain please call or email at our clinic for more information regarding spinal decompression therapy and how it can help to improve your condition and reduce symptoms.
